Market DAy and Book Club Announcement
The class has been learning a great deal about economy. EAch citizen has the opportunity to get HIRED for different jobs in the classroom and earn money. We have been budgeting our money, using our balancing books.
we are so excited to invent products and services to offer each other during our class market day. This will be an in- class project only. (Nothing will need to be prepared and brought from home.) WE hope to have our classroom businesses up and running by the end of this week.
The class has also been working to choose and share literature INDEPENDENTLY. We are working on being experts at discussing our opinions about books in a variety of ways. This is optional! IF your child would like to share a book that they have read recently, a book summary form must be submitted along with letting me know when they would like to share and the form of sharing. (Book Share will be every Friday.) If we get enough interest, we will vote on one of these shared books to do a "book Club" discussion group.

Dear Parents,
Many of you have asked about parent – teacher conferences. Third quarter conferences are at teacher request only. If you have not heard from me, it is because I did not feel a conference was needed at this time, however, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns. All students will receive progress reports Thursday, February 8.
Please note that students can bring in Valentine’s to exchange on Thursday. Please only have your child sign his or her own name and not label each individual exchange. This helps things run a little bit more smoothly.
Happy Mardi Gras!
Mrs. Balsamo

Troll Bridge Challenge: Can You and Your team use the materials you have to solve this problem?
Peek at the Week 9.18.17
Literacy: We are wrapping up Lesson 3 from last week. Students will have their final checks Monday and Tuesday. We are working hard to support our responses with evidence from the text. Soon our published personal narratives will go home in a traveling class binder.
Math: This week we will be reviewing Topic 1 and 2 concepts and take a sneak peek at Topic 3 (Subtraction Strategies). Our first benchmark in math will be next Wednesday after the Fall Break. A Study Guide will go home next week. The students are beginning to work towards expressing the steps of their math thinking with words, pictures and symbols.
Science and Social Studies: We are excited about our class elections on Tuesday. We have had a lot discussion about the importance of a government, responsible citizens and protecting our most important resources. The question was posed as to whether or not the choices of others across the globe had an impact on our community. We are still exploring drafting and voting on laws for the problems we see happening at recess. This was our first big design thinking challenge and we are doing great!
